I have Kaspersky antivirus installed on my new computer. However, is it enough to protect my computer. I do use internet alot and I want an efficient protection. I was thinking firewall, anti-malware, anti-spyware, e-mail protection. Basically, what all do I need to get???

i have SYMANTEC antivirus and it works good!!
Do in this order:

1. Reboot computer

2. Run anti-virus program to remove the virus.

3. Reboot computer again.

Should be good after that. Make sure that when you reboot the computer that you reboot it in safe mode.

If avast detects the file you are downloading as a virus or adware, it will alert you and it will give you an option to "Abort Connection" to prevent downloading the harmful file. Sometimes the file still gets in your computer but avast detects it again and gives you options like "Delete" or "Move to Chest" which is the same thing as locking up the virus so it doesn't harm your computer.

That is a great list! Looks like you did your research. On my computer I use all of those except the last two, but I'm currently researching them. The best way to regain RAM is to get CCleaner and Ad-Aware from download.com. Also go to Start%26gt;%26gt; Run and type in msconfig. Get rid of any background programs that load into memory. Be careful not to delete good programs though. You can google them to make sure they can be removed. You remove by unchecking them in msconfig. Clutter be gone, memory regained! By the way, memory is cheap and usually easy to install. That's yet another option.

You can purchase a ram stick and it just clicks in place inside the hard drive. Check your instruction book and see what type you should buy that is compatible with your computer. You can call a pc store and tell them what you have and they will suggest what to buy. I wouldn't settle for less than 512gb

Personally, I pay for it and I feel it's worth it. However, I have a couple of friends and family members whose computers I work on. They're not always up for paying for some of this preventative stuff so for anti virus I have them use AVG. It's free for home use and it updates in the background like any other program. Never had a virus on any of the machines that it's used on so if you're not doing anything overly dangerous then I'd say go for something free.

Yes, it means the virus keeps re-installing. What to do, is to make sure your anti-virus is up-to-date, then restart PC in safe mode (Tap F8 at start up) then run an anti-virus scan in safe mode, to prevent the virus from running, then remove with anti-virus, then restart your PC.

Most likely, this is a java script based virus and when the host file is deleted it will move itself to another file . Myspace has this going on with a comment that was sent out. if you can find the file thats infected it can be removed by finding the java script in that file and deleteing it.
I would suggest that you also run an antispyware scan, in addition to an antivirus scan.

Try this go to http://www.trendmicro.com and do their free virus scan, I think they call it "house call". You should be able to scan and delete the Trojan. Also you could download the McAfee 30 trial and install it update it and use it to get the Trojan. But it sounds like AVG is not getting the job done on this virus. What this means is that your computer date/time is incorrect and the AVG Internal database is not sync'd up.

Correct the date/time on the computer (be sure to set AM/PM correctly), then run an update with AVG. It will sync up the update to the computer time and you will be good to go.

I have a great program for you. Its called E-Trust Anti-Virus and it is free through roadrunner and about 100 dollars in a store.
I will be brutally honest with you. If you have had Virusburst (a Smitfraud infection) 3 times now, I suspect it is a case of PEBKAC (google it). Most people go a whole life-time without their computer getting infected with VirusBurst even ONCE!

I would recommend AOL Active Virus Shield. It catches more viruses than the other free options like AVG. My other problems with AVG include the fact that they actually do not allow you to use it on more than one computer, and also there is no way to temporarily pause or disable while playing a game for example.

I have several high security level issues on my computer since I have no virus protection. I contacted SBC and was told that Norton is having a problem loading. Heck I know that because when you try to load it tells you it won't be available until 12/15/08 at 12:25 or something like that. Maybe not, because by the time the anti-virus scanning removes registry entries and the related host virus program which has already implanted its mine traps everywhere in files and folders and whenever you click on them, they multiply again.

Have no choice to delete these inffected files even it may crash PC later if the inffected files are the system ones.

So, need emergency rescue disk about 3GB with the installed widows to run and use external drive for the inffected disk to save files need and reformat old disk.

That depends on the virus program you use. Some will quarantine the file in a separate folder making it useless. Other programs simply identify it, and you have to delete it yourself.
Wait till the scan is finsih, after it finished it will ask you whether you want it to quarantined or delete. If the virus already infected some of the files in ur computer maybe it will asked you something like to you want to delete the file that been infected with the virus or ask you if you want to repair the infected files. hopefully your comp will be ok

Many viruses will block the installation of antivirus software. Since the virus does it work within the copy of Windows it installs itself to, the safest way to remove the virus is to do the following:

1) update the antivirus software on a PC that's not infected.

2) remove the hard drive from the PC.

3) place it in a USB external enclosure.

4) connect the enclosure to the clean PC.

5) run a full virus and spyware scan of the hard drive using the highest scan settings the security software provides.

I have an old computer that is running on Windows NT. Everytime I try to update the virus definitions it will download but will not update (the "last time updated" still shows 11/17). I have downloaded the definitions many times and the download will complete successfully and it will even go through the "updating definitions" process, but the date of last "update" remains the same. I had the same thing happen to me just yesterday....it took forever to remove it and to be honest, I don't know what suddenly made it uninstall. I just kept trying over and over again using the Add/Remove Programs feature on the Control Panel and eventually it worked.

Sorry, I know that's not much of an answer, but honestly I don't know why it suddenly decided to uninstall itself after refusing to so many times.
Norton can't be deleted, it has to be uninstalled. Click start, settings, control panel, ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. There will be two or three there start with NORTON ANTIVIRUS and that will uninstall all applications of Norton. "PEACE"
Have you gone to Add/Remove Programs and removed it? Also, try removing all of the Symantec items from the list as well.

If you have done all of that, you can attempt to navigate to your Program Files Folder in My Computer, and manual delete the folder, though that should really be a last resort.

I would probably go with AVG as Norton is always a pain in the neck. Uninstall Norton and install AVG. The reason why both are not working on your system is that you cannot have two antivirus programs running on a single PC.

Here's what you should do.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.

2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.

Hopefully you are using antivirus / firewall from a RELIABLE vendor like McAfee... all of these vendors tools will be able to detect and remove virus, trojan, worms, etc.. as long as they are PROPERLY configured and automatically updating with the newest definitions.

i have tried more than 30 different antiviruses by now and there is some or the other fault in each of them i used nod32 , which is fast but doesnt give full protection , norton gives full protction but not fast enough , f-secure - is fast and gives full protectkion but is not compatible with my zone alarm firewall , and mcafee - i dont know they are may be searching for viruses in mars - it does not detect viruses , not safe enough. any recomendations wuld be appreciated . thank you

First off that Zone Alarm firewall is probably the best software firewall out there. Kudos! I would say that all you need is a free anti-virus program. AVG free version is great. It stopped a nasty drive-by download on my pc last year and the 7.5 version is just out.

It is exceptionally good, especially for free! I am a technology professional and it's what I use personally on all my home computers. All anti-virus programs must do updates to keep up with new malicious code, so criticism of that isn't really valid.

I've used it for years and never had any problems, it is safe, and works great. I've never had a computer get infected while using it. I also use their free spyware killer.

Don't go to porn sites, don't download random stuff, stick to big name sites like youtube wikipedia google yahoo cnn.com because they don't try and infect your computer. Clear the cookies on your browser every so often and do NOT click on pop ups because pop ups can give you all kinds of **** if you don't click on the little red x that closes it. No matter what that pop up is saying be it your computer is going to explode because it has a virus or lose 100 pounds instantly it is lying.

It must've been from a link you clicked on in an answer or a question which took you somewhere other than yahoo.answers.com and tried to infect your system.

They only way to find out would be to look at your internet browser history and see if you were on a site other than

yahoo answers today. It would probably be in the middle of

some yahoo answers history's if you viewed/sorted it by time or order visited.

It would probably take a while to do and then you could post a warning if you found out which question or answer pointed you to that site.

If it tells you where it is you can try deleting the file by hand. If it won't delete try Pocket Killbox (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/ki... You can try several options including delete on restart that nearly always works.

The other thing you can do is start in safe mode (F8 during boot-chose safe mode with networking) and run your virus scan. It has a lot better chance of deleting in safe mode.

I also highly recommend you scan with AdAware and Sybot (both free) as well. They might find things that Symantec doesn't.

Try uninstalling the anti virus you have now, I had the same problem and I installed avast. I think for being free, it's the best. I find it better than avg. But, everyone has their own opinion so try it out, and see what works best for you.
I used to have the same problem, and it turned out to be some thing installed in my internet explorer tool bar. I wasnt sure what it was but I just sweeped and uninstalled a bunch of stuff I didnt use, and It stopped poping.

That is really a very common question. There is a movie called "Red Sun" that shows how a hacker in the early 90's was able to crack into some highly secure bank systems and govt systems. Instead of persecuting him, the govt actually hired him as their security and risk management manager.

All in all, with all the information out there now on how to get into systems, there really is no need to hire hackers to create new software. The individual "rogue" hackers do quite a good job of that as is.

The first step is to completely remove Norton from your system. Go to Add/Remove programs and get rid of everything with the words Norton or Symantec in front of it. It is crap that bogs down your machine.

Then go to the web and free the free version of AVG. Go to: free.grisoft.com. Install it and update it then run a scan and it should clean you up.

i had the same problem as well an for some reason norton stalled and they recommended i remove all norton and reinstall. i can't remember but, i am sure i found it on my symantec security toolbar.

any way it removed all norton components and then i reinstall it with my disc and presto! works just fine now.

I'd suggest you check with Better Techs, I was having problems on my computer, and they remoted in, worked with me on the issues, and did an extensive cleanup of my computer, for a reasonable price. Ccleaner is a great cleanup tool, with that you can clean up temp. files, save/remove certain cookies etc... take a look at your startup menu and delete anything you don't need running when you connect, and it has it's own add/remove programs.

i had norton antivirus, here is what i've found out through my own little experiment.

-full system scans take roughly 1hr 10min-15min

-i've had norton antivirus for three years and it has found and removed 2 viruses, both common with low payloads, low stealth, and relatively harmless

-i had 41 running processes with norton antivirus.

-i dropped to 30 running processes when i un-installed it.

-i installed NOD32 and gained 1 single running process, opposed to norton's 11

-full system scan takes 15-21min!

-i found two trojan horses that norton missed, with the FREE TRIAL of NOD32!

This was ridiculous.

You don't say what antivirus program that you use. Suggest that you remove the entire program and reinstall the program to resolve the problem.

If it is free no problems, If purchased just put your key back into the program. Or some purchased programs like what I have does not require to reinsert your key as their servers knows your hardware and system.

If you go to security settings, from start button, control panel, then click on security. I think you might be able to change your settings from there. But not sure why they should have changed them selves, these things happen I suppose.

Just put the disc in and when it's starts up you will most likely get a option to repair or/and reinstall.
