Avast is better than AVG - no question about that. Avira is the best free anti-virus though.

a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!

a. Real-time protection

b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir

a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

b. It's cute umbrella icon

c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

Cons: A very sluggish update

The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

hi, the best FREE antivirus is C.O.M.O.D.O. just google and its a free download,the best one that you pay for is KASPERSKY,funny name but it is the BEST. --cheers--
AVG Is Much Better Avast Is Ok But AVG Is Better
Avast. By far. Not only does Avast have much better virus detection rates than AVG, but the new version of Avast (4.8) includes bothe an anti-spyware and an anti-rootkit component. And still for the same low low price of free.

I use and recommend Avast.

Now, about Comodo as suggested above...

I'm a big fan and recommender of Comodo (I run both BOClean and Comodo Firewall Pro), but their antivirus is not to be recommended. The current version is still in beta, and the final version *still* doesn't even have a guesstimate release date.
