For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free!

BTW, Avoid the free version of an anti-virus called AVG, it is wildly popular with noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children, but it has horrible virus detection capibilities.

Avg.com has the AVG free virus protection. I don't use it anymore because I wanted to be protected better so I went with CA
Kaspersky Internet Security has free anti-virus for a few months. It is a very HIGH graded anti virus, easy to use, and it never lets a virus get away.

I recommend it.
You might try Spybot Search and Destroy as well the online scan at Housecall.

In a jam, you can email a file to a Yahoo email account. When you access the email, Yahoo will block the attachment if it is infected.
