Re-posting a question regarding anti-virus downloads?

My Norton antivirus has just expired, need to select a downloadable one that is good but not over $40. I hesitate in renewing Norton as I have read that it slows the computer and doesn`t always find virus threats. Can anyone help ?

I use Avast... it is excellent and free for the home user. Auto updates itself and is fast and clean. I do recommend you turn off the sounds tho cuz it can be a bit annoying at three in the morning it says in a monotone voice " virus database has been updated". Other than that... awesome program.

I second the first answerer's suggestion of Avast. Avast's detection rate is significantly better than AVG.

It is what I use and recommend.
you can use avg anti virus, it is free. but avg alone wont do it. you should also install spybot-search and destroy for malware and spyware. it also fixes errors on your computer.
Try Avira antivir....its the BEST at the moment....

pros.

1) Doesn't slow down your machine.

2) Even the free version detects more malware/viruses than most purchased antvirus software

3) Hence You could even use the free version and be well protected

cons

1) Updates take a little more time

2) A tad expensive

but after a little while the update downloads get faster......so why not avira......its detection rate is above 93%....MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE MARKET, at the moment.
While it's not good as a corporate solution, AVG Antivirus works well for personal computers and networks. Also, it's completely free.

You can find it at http://free.grisoft.com/
