I HAVE BROUGHT THE TOOL UP AND IT SHOWS THAT THE RESIDENT PROTECTION IS DISABLED. I HAVE TRIED TO 'ENABLE', BUT I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. I HAVE E-MAILED AVAST SUPPORT, BUT NO RESPONCE. IS MY VIRUS PROTECTION STILL WORKING?

No it is switched off if the little ball is in the icon with the red line through it you need to enable it straight away.
right click on the icon next to the clock and at the very bottom of the list of options it says Start On-Access Protection.this is the one you need to click to turn it on.

No need to yell you know. I have a feeling you disabled it on your own trying to get that little white ball to go away right. Just because you hide it does not mean it is not there and still running. Enable it again and just live with it, If you don't like it then close your eyes and ignore it or remove the program and suffer with the virus community.
