a message comes up on my pc saying that i have a virus and i should download virus protection. and my computer is running real slow.

i had the same thing but then i went to google and typed in google updater and i downloaded it and it has this infection and virus program and it deleted all my problems and i haven't had any problems since then

Use some other software. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
Well if Norton says you are clean, don't listen to pop-ups, and just because Norton says you're clean doesn't mean you are, you need a spyware scanner something like Spybot, its good and free, should clean up most of your spyware, and always make sure your virus definitions are up to date on Norton.
