with any type of software it depends on your operating system, the speed of your system, memory installed and what you use your system for..........some of the above mentioned programs will dog your system to a crawl....norton especially is resource hungry and not free....

the free ones aren't so good.. unless they came with your computer, which you should've already paid with the price of the computer. If you insist, simply google it and they're all basically the same. I use McAfee which comes with a price, but it comes with full protection, though you have to pay for each type (spam blocker, anti-virus, etc.)
I personally use Norton 360. It is very good, but you have to pay for it. Obviouslly, free ones are not that good. Any anti-virus you get please make sure of the following: The signatures are updated, and the quality of signatures. If you keep running the same anti-virus and don't bother to update it, there is no use of it. Security is expensive, time and money vise. Protect your computer with good anti-virus. it is worth it.
